Gastric bypass is a form of weight loss surgery, or bariatric surgery that’s performed on people who are severely overweight. The goal of gastric bypass surgery and all weight loss surgeries is to drastically reduce food intake so rapid weight loss is achieved. The gastric bypass procedure is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia, and there are generally two different ways to do the surgery. One method is called the Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass, and the other is called a biliopancreatic diversion bypass. The Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass is the less complicated and more often used surgery of the two, and it can be performed laparoscopically so it won’t leave as big a scar and is less invasive. In each technique, a smaller stomach pouch is created to greatly reduce hunger and slow food intake. Not just anyone can stroll in and request a gastric bypass, and specific reasons must exist before a surgeon will perform it.
The primary reason that a gastric bypass is performed is because the patient is dangerously overweight. This may be due to genetics, an illness like hypothyroidism or poor lifestyle choices. Whatever the reason for the excess weight, it must be evident to the doctors that the patient isn’t able to lose the weight through conventional means. Weight loss surgeries like gastric bypass are more of a last resort than an everyday treatment. A patient may be obese to the point of being eligible for gastric bypass, but if he’s able to get out of the danger zone with diet modification and exercise, bariatric surgery may not be prescribed.
Your family history may be another reason that gastric bypass is chosen to lose the weight. If you are overweight and you’ve had family members who’ve developed serious problems or even died from weight-related issues, weight loss surgery may be the best option to keep everything under control. If you’ve already developed heath problems from your weight like diabetes or sleep apnea, your doctor may want to do a gastric bypass to give you back some quality of life and start the weight loss process.
Gastric bypass and other forms of bariatric surgery are serious procedures and aren’t to be taken lightly. If you are obese and think that weight loss surgery is the answer to your problems, you might want to reconsider that opinion. It’s always best to lose weight naturally through diet and exercise. It’s only when someone just isn’t able to accomplish this task on their own and their health is at risk that a surgical intervention is used. Patients who are under 18 years of age will especially be encouraged to right the ship on their own before gastric bypass is considered.
Weight loss surgery such as gastric bypass is a life saving technique for many people, and it is always there if necessary. However, healthy eating and body movement without making any surgical adjustments is always preferable. If you have a weight issue that is affecting your health, visit your doctor immediately to see if gastric bypass is the right solution for you
